128” Poly Muslin

At iStudio Projects, our Rose Brand Poly Muslin IFR is a premium 100% polyester fabric engineered specifically for theatrical, scenic, and large-format projection applications where both durability and permanent flame resistance are essential. Available in an extra-wide 128″ (approximately 10’8″) width in white, this poly muslin delivers a measured on-axis front-projection gain of approximately 0.82, settling to a consistent and even 0.62–0.65 across off-axis viewing angles spanning 75° in either direction — making it an excellent choice for wide-audience venues where uniform image brightness is critical. Unlike chemically treated FR fabrics, this fabric is Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR), meaning its fire resistance is built directly into the polyester fiber through non-combustible elements — not applied as a surface chemical treatment. This permanent flame resistance will not wash out, degrade with humidity, or diminish through standard laundering, giving it a significant longevity advantage in high-use production environments. It meets a comprehensive set of domestic and international flame resistance standards and carries California State Fire Marshal approval, with a Special New York City Certificate available upon request.

Product Description

Medium weight Avora™ polyester has the look and weight of cotton muslin without the stiffness.

  • Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR) — 100% Polyester — flame resistance is permanently built into the fiber through non-combustible elements; will never wash out under any standard cleaning process
  • Extra-Wide 128″ Format — at 10’8″ wide, dramatically reduces or eliminates seams in large-format drops, cycloramas, and full-stage surrounds
  • Dual-Purpose Projection Surface — front projection gain of 0.82 on-axis settling to a consistent 0.62–0.65 across a 75° viewing angle in either direction; ideal for wide-audience venues
  • California State Fire Marshal Approved — CSFM Approval No. F-712.01 / License No. F-071201
  • Multi-Standard Flame Resistance Certification — meets NFPA 701-2010 TM #1, California Title 19 Test #1237.1 (small scale), and British BS 5867: Part 2:1980
  • Special New York City Certificate — available upon request
  • Water Washing Safe — unlike chemically treated FR cotton muslin, IFR properties are completely unaffected by laundering or moisture exposure
  • Lightweight & Easy to Fly — polyester construction offers excellent strength-to-weight ratio for large drops and flying applications
  • Consistent Uniform Gain — near-flat gain curve across 75° viewing angle ensures even image brightness for wide-audience projection environments
  • Versatile Application — suitable as a stage drop, cyclorama, surround, or front/rear projection surface in theatrical and event production environments
  • Standard Roll Length — approximately 65 yards per roll for efficient project planning

Storage:

  • Store rolled in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight and prolonged UV exposure, which can degrade polyester fibers over time
  • Keep away from excessive heat sources; polyester is sensitive to high temperatures and can deform or melt if stored near heating equipment
  • Avoid storing in areas with heavy airborne dust or oils — while the IFR properties will not wash out, particulate accumulation can still diminish practical flame resistance performance
  • Use breathable fabric or muslin storage covers; avoid sealed plastic wrapping that can trap heat and moisture

Folding:

  • Rolling onto a rigid tube is strongly preferred over folding for any storage period exceeding a few days
  • If temporary folding is required for transport, use broad, loose folds with minimal crease pressure to prevent permanent set lines in the polyester weave
  • Do not place heavy items on top of folded fabric, as polyester can take on permanent creases under sustained pressure

Periodic Cleaning:

  • Spot clean with a lightly dampened cloth; polyester is more moisture-tolerant than cotton muslin, but avoid excessive saturation
  • Vacuum gently using a soft brush attachment to remove surface dust and particulate buildup
  • Unlike chemically treated FR cotton muslin, water-based cleaning will not remove the IFR properties of this fabric — however, keep cleaning minimal to maintain surface quality for projection use
  • Compressed air is acceptable for light dust removal between uses

Major Cleaning:

  • Standard laundering (machine wash, gentle cycle, cool water) is permissible without risk of losing flame resistance — the IFR treatment is inherent to the fiber and will not wash out
  • Use mild, non-residue detergent; avoid fabric softeners or bleach, which can affect polyester surface texture and projection performance
  • Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry — do not expose to high heat, which can cause polyester deformation
  • After any major cleaning, conduct an NFPA 705 field test before returning the fabric to service, particularly if the fabric has been in storage or heavy use

Safety & Handling:

  • Although polyester is inherently more resilient than cotton, avoid dragging the fabric across rough or abrasive surfaces that could snag or pill the weave and affect the projection surface quality
  • For large drops and full-width (128″) installations, use multiple personnel and appropriate rigging equipment to prevent uneven tension, tearing at attachment points, or batten pocket failure
  • Inspect all seams, grommets, and batten pockets before each hang; do not use fabric with compromised structural attachment points
  • When used as a projection surface, ensure even tensioning across the full width — any wrinkling or slack will distort the projected image

Flame Resistance Maintenance:

  • The IFR flame resistance is permanent for the life of the fabric — it is woven into the polyester fiber itself and does not rely on chemical surface treatments
  • Flame resistance will not wash out under any standard cleaning conditions
  • Despite the inherent permanence of IFR, annual field testing is still recommended using the NFPA 705 Field Test Method for Textiles, as accumulations of airborne dust and oils may diminish practical flame resistance over time
  • California State Fire Marshal registration: License #F-071201 (CSFM Approval No. F-712.01)
  • Standards certified: NFPA 701-2010 TM #1, California Title 19 Test #1237.1 (small scale), British BS 5867: Part 2:1980
  • A Special New York City Certificate is available upon request
