12’ – 39’ Extra Wide Muslin

At iStudio Projects, our Rose Brand Heavy Weight FR Muslin is a premium, flame-retardant 100% cotton fabric engineered for large-scale theatrical and performance environments. Available in an extraordinary range of extra-wide widths — from 12′ through 39′ — and offered in both bleached white and natural finishes, this muslin is purpose-built for fabricating stage drops, cycloramas (cycs), and full-stage surrounds. Its extra-wide format allows panels to be sewn into completely seamless drops, eliminating the horizontal seam lines that are notoriously difficult to paint out of a scenic design. The bleached white finish can be used unpainted straight out of the roll, or painted with appropriate techniques to preserve the integrity of the FR treatment. Beyond its scenic applications, Heavy Weight FR Muslin excels as a front-projection surface, delivering a consistent, near-flat gain of approximately 0.85 across viewing angles spanning 75° in either direction — making it equally suited to high-resolution projection and dramatic abstract lighting effects. Each roll is approximately 65 yards, with per-linear-yard weights ranging from 1.7 lbs (12′ width) to 6.2 lbs (39′ width), and most widths carrying a fabric weight of approximately 200–220 g/m². This fabric is certified flame retardant under a comprehensive suite of international and domestic standards and is registered with the California State Fire Marshal under License Numbers F-54508 (bleached white) and F-054505 (natural).

Product Description

Heavy Weight, Extra Wide FR Muslin in widths from 12′ to 39′.

  • Extra-Wide Format — Up to 39′ Wide — available in nine widths from 12′ through 39′, enabling completely seamless drops, cycloramas, and full-stage surrounds with no horizontal seam lines to paint out
  • 100% Cotton Construction — natural fiber provides excellent paintability, light diffusion, and an organic surface texture ideal for scenic applications
  • Dual Finish Availability — offered in both bleached white (usable unpainted straight off the roll) and natural finish for scenic and painter’s applications
  • Front Projection Capable — consistent near-flat gain of approximately 0.85 across a 75° viewing angle in either direction; suitable for wide-audience projection environments
  • Pre-Shrunk in Processing — has undergone slight shrinkage during FR treatment, making sizing more predictable and reliable for custom fabrication
  • Paintable Surface — can be painted with appropriate scenic paints; heavy treatments require special techniques to avoid recrystallization of FR chemical salts
  • Broadest FR Certification Suite for Cotton Muslin — NFPA 701 (1989 & 2004), California Administrative Code Title 19, CAN/ULC-S109-03, BS 5867 Part B, ASTM E-84 Class A/Class 1, and Boston FD IX-1
  • California State Fire Marshal Registered — #F-54508 (bleached white) and #F-054505 (natural)
  • ASTM E-84 Class A / Class 1 Rated — qualifies for interior wall and ceiling finish applications in addition to theatrical use
  • Wide Weight Range — per-linear-yard weights from 1.7 lbs (12′ width) to 6.2 lbs (39′ width); most widths at approximately 200–220 g/m²
  • Standard Roll Length — approximately 65 yards per roll across all widths for efficient project planning
  • Available by the Yard, as Custom Cyc, or as Rental — flexible purchasing and rental options including custom sewn cycloramas and drops

Storage:

  • Store rolled, never folded long-term, in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight and moisture
  • Keep in a climate-controlled space; avoid areas with wide fluctuations in atmospheric humidity, which accelerate degradation of the FR chemical treatment
  • Store away from HVAC vents and areas prone to airborne dust and oils, which diminish FR effectiveness over time
  • When not in use, wrap loosely in breathable fabric or muslin storage bags — avoid plastic wrapping that traps moisture

Folding:

  • Avoid sharp or repeated creasing; if temporary folding is necessary for transport, fold loosely with broad, padded folds
  • Do not stack heavy objects on top of folded fabric
  • For large drops and cycs, rolling onto a sturdy PVC or cardboard tube is strongly preferred over folding for any storage exceeding a few days

Periodic Cleaning:

  • Spot clean soiled areas using a lightly dampened cloth — use minimal moisture and allow to dry fully before re-rolling or storing
  • Vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment to remove surface dust accumulation
  • Do not machine wash or water wash under any circumstances — water washing will permanently remove the FR chemical treatment
  • Light surface dusting with compressed air is acceptable for routine maintenance

Major Cleaning:

  • When deeper cleaning is required, use dry cleaning or non-water washing processes only
  • The FR treatment is rated to withstand up to three (3) dry cleanings — track the number of dry cleaning cycles and plan for FR re-treatment accordingly
  • Do not use steam cleaning, spot-spraying, or wet extraction methods on this fabric
  • After any major cleaning, conduct an NFPA 705 field test prior to returning the fabric to service

Safety & Handling:

  • When painting, use appropriate scenic paints and techniques; heavy paint treatments can cause recrystallization of FR chemical salts and must be applied carefully to avoid compromising fire resistance
  • When handling large drops or cycs (especially 26’8″–39′ widths), use multiple personnel and proper lifting equipment to prevent fabric stress, tearing at grommets, or seam failure
  • Inspect all seams, grommets, and batten pockets before each hang; do not use fabric with compromised attachment points
  • For use as a projection surface, ensure the fabric is tensioned evenly — uneven tension creates surface distortion that affects image quality

Flame Resistance Maintenance:

  • The FR treatment has an expected minimum lifetime of one (1) year, though it is likely to remain effective longer under proper storage conditions
  • Annual field testing is required using the NFPA 705 (1997 or later) Field Test Method for Textiles
  • Water washing, high humidity environments, and accumulations of airborne dust and oils will diminish or fully eliminate FR effectiveness — treat any of these exposures as a trigger for immediate re-testing
  • FR re-treatment should be performed by a qualified textile FR applicator whenever field testing indicates failure or after the third dry cleaning cycle
  • Flame resistance certifications on file: NFPA 701 (1989 & 2004 editions), California Administrative Code Title 19 Section 1237, CAN/ULC-S109-03, BS 5867 Part B, ASTM E-84 (Class A / Class 1), and Boston Fire Department IX-1
  • California State Fire Marshal registrations: #F-54508 (bleached white) and #F-054505 (natural)
